Symptoms of bad water parameters or illness -
• Gill shrinkage
• slime coat shedding
• fungus
• bacterial infection
• ammonia burns
• lethargy/floating/floating upside down
• bloating
• not eating/being sick
It’s really important that when we think about getting an axolotl that we follow the appropriate husbandry.
Cycling a tank using an ammonia source can take up to 3 months but this insures that the water is suitable to keep our axolotls healthy and happy! We have plenty of care guides in our blog section and were always happy to give advice. There’s also other groups we can link you to. When an axolotl shows signs of illness the first thing we rule out is temp and water parameters.
It’s also really important that when you decide to purchase or adopt an axolotl that you get them from a reputable source. Far to many people buy from pet shops that have no clue on how to care for axolotls! People then come away with false advice such as -
•They can be kept with other fish
• They need a heater
• They can eat cat food/beef/crickets
• Gravel is safe
• you don’t need to cycle your tank
These are false. Usually these lotls are too small to be sold and are really poorly from inbreeding or poorly from impaction of being kept on gravel and fed inappropriate food. Or sick from bad water parameters. Of course if you want to purchase form a pet shop that’s OK just be aware of the advice you may receive and follow appropriate care using guides in our topics or other groups.
So do your research and ask for help if you need it ❤️
