Strange Products, you never knew you needed to make owning an Axolotl easier

Updated: Feb 23, 2021

Now if you're looking at the title and scratching your head, no one would blame you.

A common misconception when looking for an axolotl is that it's just like owning a fish …. Right ??? and if you are thinking like this, then you are in for a real shock.

Axolotls are quirky, stubborn, comical and a little water puppy, that will recognise their owner and follow you all round their take. These fabulous creatures are also a master at playing dead and scaring you half to death while they are enjoying floating around their tank, they're food monsters, but most of all THEY ARE MESSY! That's right, axolotls create a lot of mess, which brings us to this blog.

So what strange products can make owning an axolotl easier?… well here we go…

The Turkey Baster

When you own an axolotl you gain a lot of respect for that “plastic sucky thing” you once may not have even known existed, but from now on it's going to be your new best friend.

Axolotls poop a lot! And it's not that invisible, blends in the environment kind. No, it's the kind that screams “look at me” and if you don’t get to it quick enough, you can guarantee your little angel is going to turn that once well formed poop, into poop-confetti, by walking through it. They do it on purpose, or at least we think they do. This is where your turkey baster comes in, if you can grab the turkey baster and clean the poop up as soon as you see it you can prevent a breakdown and keep enjoying your nice clean tank.

The turkey baster also comes in handy for removing uneaten food before it spoils and creates havoc with your tank cycle.

Reptile Feeding Tongs

We know, that axolotls aren't reptiles but just hear us out.

An axolotls main food source is earthworms. If you're not a fan of those wriggly little creatures ( i know i'm not), then the reptile feeding tongs prevent you from becoming too acquainted with your axolotls meal. Trust me, you’ll thank us for this one later.

A Glass Jar

No we haven’t completely lost it at this point. Axolotls love a glass jar to “hide” in. It is believed that although the jar is see through, it offers them a sense of security, they're also cheap!. Glass jars also come in handy if you need to remove the axolotl from the tank for any reason, as there is no risk of them getting their little toes stuck in a net.

Cups

We don't suggest offering your new Axolotl a cuppa. Tea does have many benefits to axolotls, but we'll save that for another blog.

Just with glass jars these dippy creatures are sure you can't see them with their butts and tails sticking out of the cup, nope, totally invisible. So old cups are appreciated by Axolotls even if using them does leave us scratching our heads.

Well there you have it, owning an axolotl really is a privilege , they have a personality like no other aquatic animal. Stay tuned for more tips and tricks to help make caring for your little water sausage easier.
